The study on the descendants of Tunisian immigrants in France and Tunisia was part of the LEMMA project, "Mobilization of the diaspora and integration of migration in local development", financed by the European Union and implemented by Expertise France. Its objective was to improve knowledge of the main Tunisian communities in Europe with a view to setting up a targeted program to mobilize the skills of the diaspora in order to promote the integration of migration in Tunisia's local and regional development. This study was carried out in 2018-2019 in France and Tunisia by the Thaly International Agency, commissioned and supervised by the National Observatory of Migration and Expertise France, and was published by Editions Nirvana (Tunisia) in November 2019.

The authors of this work have chosen to report living testimonies presented both in the form of typologies and in the framework of thematic reflections on social issues (language, religion, family, discrimination, dual identity and origins, images and representations of Tunisia, modes of associative and professional commitments, and ongoing projects). An important retrospective of the expectations of immigrants in France and of immigrants settled in Tunisia follows, in the face of the necessary redeployment of institutional policies in favor of the diaspora. These expectations reflect a concern for recognition of the diaspora and inclusion in Tunisian society. The document concludes with a series of recommendations that insist on the need to build a relationship of interaction and circulation between immigrants from France and Tunisia.

This study will be used as a reference. It constitutes to date, along with the French case, the only exhaustive regional study on the descendants of immigrants. It should thus be a prelude to other monographs conducted on the new Tunisian generations in other host countries (Italy, Germany, Canada), and also targeting the descendants of other Maghrebi immigrants in these same countries, including Algerians and Moroccans. The study was preceded by a literature review (downloadable below) aimed at better understanding the current state of knowledge and scientific production on the descendants of immigrants.
